School Street to be renamed “Okoniewski Way” on Friday

Change will honor longtime Luxemburg-Casco Principal, the late Steve Okoniewski

LUXEMBURG, Wis. – The Luxemburg-Casco community will honor the lasting legacy of its longtime high school principal, the late Steve Okoniewski, by renaming the existing School Street to “Okoniewski Way.” The street is located on the east side of the L-C district campus, between the high/middle school buildings and Stodola’s IGA Supermarket.

The dedication recognizes Okoniewski’s 25 years of outstanding leadership, unwavering commitment to students and the profound impact he made on generations of Spartans. The change will go into effect later this week (Aug. 21), when the new sign is installed.

Okoniewski (pronounced oh-ka-NOW-skee), affectionately known as “Mr. O,” earned his master’s degree in school administration from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. He began his administrative career as a high school principal in Wibaux, Mont., followed by time in St. Francis, Wis. In 1989, he found his home at Luxemburg-Casco High School, where he would serve as principal for the next 25 years until his 2014 retirement.

“Mr. O was known as a leader who believed in people,” says Jenny Bandow, athletic director at L-C who was hired by Okoniewski in 2006. “He admired the community-minded spirit and strong work ethic of the greater Luxemburg area – values that aligned perfectly with his own approach to education and leadership. Under his guidance, Luxemburg-Casco High School continued to foster a culture of excellence, pride and opportunity for every student.”

Beyond his responsibilities as principal, Mr. O was a familiar face at countless school events and athletic competitions. His passion for students extended beyond the classroom, volunteering as an assistant football coach for the L-C Spartans, helping to mentor young athletes while reinforcing the values of teamwork, discipline and perseverance.

He had enjoyed a six-year playing career in the NFL as a defensive lineman for Buffalo (1972-73), Green Bay (1974-75) and St. Louis (1976-77) following a standout collegiate career at Montana.

To thousands of students who walked the halls of Luxemburg-Casco High School, Mr. O was more than a principal – he was a mentor, role model and steady presence who genuinely cared about their success. His leadership left a lasting imprint on both the school and community.

“Renaming School Street to Okoniewski Way serves as a fitting tribute to a man whose influence extended far beyond the school walls,” adds Bandow. “Every student, staff member and visitor who travels the road will be reminded of a leader who devoted his career to serving others, building relationships and making Luxemburg-Casco a better place.”

Okoniewski passed away in February 2024 at the age of 74.

The name “Okoniewski Way” will stand forever as a symbol of Mr. O’s remarkable legacy – a legacy of leadership, service, resilience and Spartan pride that will continue to inspire future generations.
