Dual-Credit Opportunities Give High School Students Head Start on Career, Significant Tuition Savings

The results are in, and Luxemburg-Casco High School students have taken advantage of the multitude of dual-credit opportunities available to them – in a very meaningful way, particularly with a nearby partner university.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UWGB) recently reported its dual-credit enrollment impact for the 2024-25 academic year. L-C students had robust participation in the UWGB programs, realizing significant tuition cost savings.

LCHS students last year earned 1,001 college credits through UWGB. Tuition saved by these students through dual-credit enrollment at the school a year ago was $606,734.92.

Equally impressive is the fact that the Luxemburg-Casco School District had the eighth-most student participants in UWGB’s dual-credit programs. Of the seven districts with higher participation numbers than L-C, six have significantly larger student populations.

“It is fantastic that so many of our students are taking advantage of this opportunity to earn college credits at low or no cost,” says Luxemburg-Casco High School Principal Tyson Tlachac. “Beyond the significant tuition-cost savings, participation helps students to explore career pathways while still in high school and to connect them with college majors that will lead to their future goals.”

Lux-Casco students earned dual credit in three of the four ways offered by UWGB. Over half of the college credits earned – 523 – were through the university’s Rising Phoenix Early College High School Program. This collaboration between school districts and UW-Green Bay provides students with dual enrollment, success coaching and the opportunity to earn both a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts and Sciences degree, beginning in their junior year of high school.

According to UW-Green Bay Chancellor Michael Alexander, 94 percent of Rising Phoenix program participants go on to complete their bachelor’s degree. The program received a $1 million boost from the Wisconsin state budget in September 2025.

LCHS students earned another 443 college credits by taking College Credit in High School. These students took college courses in the high school that were taught by a high school teacher approved as a UW-Green Bay instructor.

There are 12 different dual-credit courses available to Lux-Casco students through UWGB, all of which are taught by LCHS teaching staff. Subject areas of these courses include English, Math, Social Studies, Art and Computer Programming.

L-C students also earned 37 total credits through the university’s Early College Credit Program, where students take dual-enrollment courses at a UWGB campus location or online, learning alongside other college students.

Advanced Placement (AP) courses – college-level courses offered in high school by the College Board, which are more rigorous than standard high school classes and allow students to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both – once were the primary manner to earn college credit while in high school.

However, in the past five years, Luxemburg-Casco High School has markedly expanded the range of its student offerings. There are a multitude of curriculum pathways that allow students to get a head start on their post-secondary studies and, in some cases, to earn a college degree prior to, or in conjunction with, high school graduation.

Beyond the post-secondary degree pathways offered through the UW-Green Bay partnership, LCHS students also can earn college credits through Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC), Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC), UW Oshkosh (UWO) and the Bellin College Healthcare Academy.

NWTC offers 19 dual-credit courses to Luxemburg-Casco students in subjects ranging from English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, Business and Technical Education. L-C students also can earn credit through NWTC’s Start College Now Program, where courses are taken directly at an NWTC campus or online.

NWTC additionally provides two technical diploma programs for LCHS students: Automotive Maintenance Technician (at the high school) and Diesel Maintenance Technician (at the Casco Career Academy). Taught by NWTC instructors, students can graduate with a technical diploma from the college while still in high school.

The Bellin College Healthcare Academy gives LCHS students the opportunity to explore careers in the healthcare field while getting a head start on obtaining related college credits at a reduced rate; there is the ability to earn up to 42 college credits while in high school. These students often gain meaningful practical experience in a work-based healthcare environment to complement their academic studies.

Both FVTC and UWO offer one course each in partnership with the Luxemburg-Casco School District.

In all, LCHS students have access to 33 dual-credit courses taught right in the high school by its teachers.

Tyson Tlachac

“I encourage any student who is interested in exploring the dual-credit opportunities offered by L-C and its post-secondary partners to meet with their high school counselor, individually or along with their family, to discuss eligibility and enrollment details,” says Tlachac. “It is never too early to start planning for your future, so we advise that students do so sooner, rather than later, to ensure that there is ample time to enroll in all of the desired courses.”

No doubt, Luxemburg-Casco High School students are finding that dual-credit opportunities are a ‘win’ for them, both in terms of getting a head start on their post-secondary education and in tuition cost savings.
