Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly become an influential force in our world, shaping industries, innovation, and daily life. As such, it is essential that we, as educators, equip students with the knowledge and skills to navigate and use AI ethically and responsibly. The Luxemburg-Casco School District is committed to preparing students for a digital future while maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity and digital citizenship.

We recognize that IA is present in students' lives outside the classroom, and that some families may choose to allow its use at home under their own supervision. While that decision is entirely at the discretion of the parent or guardian, AI use in school and on school-related assignments will follow clearly defined expectations and guidelines.

To support responsible integration, the District has developed ethical guidelines for both students and staff in relation to AI use. These guidelines reflect our belief that AI should be used appropriately, transparently, and ethically--not shunned entirely, nor embraced without thoughtful consideration.

We understand that IA is a rapidly evolving field, and we will continue to evaluate tools, terms of service, and best practices to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.

Key Policies for AI Use in the Classroom

Teacher Discretion: Teacher will determine whether AI assistance is permitted for a given assignment and to what extent. If an assignment does not include specific AI usage instructions, students should assume AI is not permitted.
Student Responsibility: Students are expected to read all assignment directions carefully and complete their work based on their own understanding and effort. Any use of AI must follow teacher expectations and uphold academic integrity (i.e. citation of AI).
Access Limitations: Due to current Terms of Service agreements for most AI platforms, which typically restrict access to users 13 and older, student access to AI on school-issued devices and networks will be limited to approved sites. This measure ensures compliance with data privacy laws and protects student information.
Ongoing Learning: Our educators are actively exploring the potential of AI as a teaching and learning tool. This includes classroom demonstrations, discussions around ethical implications, and fostering critical thinking regarding the use of emerging technologies.

AI Ethics Guidelines

Ownership and Academic Dishonesty

Generative AI tools, like chatbots and image makers, can help students with schoolwork, but it's important to use them responsibly. If a has AI write a paper or solve problems and turns it in as their own work, that's considered cheating. Instead of hiding the use of AI, students should be honest and explain how they used it. Being transparent shows responsibility and helps teachers understand what the student actually learned.

Another important thing to know is that the work made by generative AI doesn't always belong to the person who used the tool. Just because you typed a prompt into an AI program and it made a story or a picture doesn't mean you fully own that creation. The AI is doing the work based on the information it was trained on, an there are still questions about who really owns the final result. That's why it's important for students to give credit and not claim AI-generated work as completely their own. As AI continues to grow, being honest and thoughtful about how it's used will matter more than ever.

Privacy

When using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, it's important to understand the value of privacy and security. The Luxemburg-Casco School District is committed to the highest standard of ethical conduct and to protecting student information in accordance with federal laws like FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act). These laws help make sure student personal information stays safe. When interacting with generative AI, all users are expected to avoid sharing any Personally Identifiable Information (PII) about themselves or others. PII includes things like full names, addresses, phone numbers, student ID numbers, email addresses, birthdates, photos, and any other information that could identify someone. Keeping this information private helps protect everyone and ensures we use AI responsibly and safely.

Bias

Generative AI can sometimes product biased or inaccurate content because it learns from large datasets that may contain stereotypes, misinformation, or uneven representation of perspectives. These biases can unintentionally influence the output, especially in sensitive or complex topics. Users should approach AI-generated content with a critical eye, cross-checking information with reliable sources, verifying facts, and considering multiple viewpoints before accepting or sharing it. Responsible use of AI means actively evaluating the quality and accuracy of its responses.

Citing Generative AI

Users should cite information created through generative AI to maintain transparency, academic honesty, and intellectual integrity. Generative AI can produce a wide range of content, including written text, images, data summaries, code, and creative works like poems or stories. By citing this content, users show which ideas or language came from an AI tool rather than their own original work. This helps educators, peers, or collaborators evaluate the accuracy and originality of the work and promotes responsible use of AI tools.

MLA is primarily used in humanities subjects such as languages, literary studies, and media studies.
APA is primarily used in the (social and behavioral) sciences and in education-related fields.

Assessment

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes an increasingly prominent tool in education and the workplace, the Luxemburg-Casco School District is committed to promoting responsible, ethical, and purposeful AI use among students and staff. The AI Usage Scale serves as a clear framework to guide how AI can be used across various levels of learning and content creation, from no AI involvement to full AI collaboration.

This guide outlines expectations for AI to ensure transparency, maintain academic integrity, and foster critical thinking. It helps students, educators, and parents understand the boundaries of appropriate AI use and provides examples to support clarity and consistency across our learning community.

Role of the Teacher

Teachers have a responsibility to use AI to improve and personalize teaching and learning and to model the appropriate use of AI tools.

Teachers should:

Take advantage of professional development opportunities to learn and improve their skills with AI tools.
Develop assessments that personalize student's ability to demonstrate their learning.
Discuss what that responsibilities of GENAI looks like in their classroom and on any given learning task or assessment and make expectations clear.
