The comments were varied, but community reaction was overwhelmingly positive at the dedication event for the new Gymnasium and Wrestling Room of the Luxemburg-Casco School District, held Sunday, Jan. 26.

“This is unreal,” was one thing heard in the crowd. Also, “So nice,” “So impressive,” “It’s been a long time coming,” and “It’s wonderful.”

District administrators and Board of Education members were thanked at the event by local residents for shepherding a process that began in 2015 to a positive resolution. “Many people came up to me at the event and said, ‘Thank you,’” Superintendent Glenn Schlender shared afterward.

Schlender opened the event program with his most important message. “It was great pride that we dedicate our new athletic facilities today, said Schlender. “It is because of you, the Luxemburg-Casco community, that our vision has become a reality. It is indeed a great day to be a Spartan.”

Luxemburg-Casco Athletic Director Jenny Bandow echoed Schlender’s comments in subsequent remarks. “I’m just in awe of how this turned out,” she said. “It gives me the chills that we have such great facilities. Thank you to the community. Thank you for believing in us and seeing the need here.”

Bandow also offered advice to current and future Luxemburg-Casco students, saying, “Take pride in these new facilities. Work hard to continue the strong tradition that we have here at Luxemburg-Casco, to fill up the new trophy cases that we have.”

At the conclusion of the program, Board of Education President Mike Driedric asked all L-C students on hand to come onto the new Gym floor to help the district board and administrative team cut the ceremonial ribbon to officially open the new facilities.

The L-C dance team then performed, followed by a shootaround by members of the school’s boy’s and girl’s basketball teams.

Community residents also had the opportunity to tour all of the new facilities, including the team locker rooms.

The Luxemburg-Casco School District undertook a long-range facilities plan in the spring of 2015. Following engagement with the local community, two referendum questions were put before voters in April 2018; both passed. Ground was broken in May 2019 on the new Gymnasium and Wrestling Room, which represent a major portion of the $27.8-million referendum projects.

A new Middle School, relocated to Luxemburg from Casco, is the other significant aspect of the projects; construction continues on that building, which is expected to be ready for use in the 2020-21 academic year.
