Project Update — August 14, 2019

New L-C gymnasium begins to take shape with installation of Spancrete® panels

A significant moment of the L-C referendum project occurred this week as the initial Spancrete® panels for the main gymnasium walls were raised into place. Mid-morning on Monday, August 12, the first panel was lifted by a crane and moved to the northeast edge of the previously-poured gym footings. By lunchtime, the second panel successfully was in position, temporarily secured by a wall brace.

The entire process of installing the Spancrete® wall panels is expected to be completed in roughly one week. In other words, within a short period of time, anyone driving past the High School will be able to see the outline of the new gymnasium.

Spancrete® is a Wisconsin-based company that produces the panels in Valders, Wis. Engineered with energy-efficient thermal insulation, this pre-manufactured product speeds up the construction schedule. It often is used with educational facilities, in addition to professional sports facilities such as Miller Park and Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.

Once the Spancrete® installation has been completed, including welding of all the metal plates, work on the roof will begin. The steel and trusses for the roof are expected to arrive on the job site this week.

At the far northeast corner of the High School, two new, 14-foot garage doors have been cut out in preparation for new lifts in the auto shop area, which will be installed the week of August 19.

The first new boiler, plus two complementary pumps, have arrived at the High School.

Northeast Asphalt completed all of its work on Monday, August 12. Their scope included the Marcks Lane bus drive, along with parking areas on the north and east sides of the Primary School. Lining of the new asphalt began on Tuesday, August 13.

In conjunction with the new asphalt, fresh concrete has been put into place in front of the Primary School. In addition to providing a clean look, the new concrete provides additional ADA ramps, allowing for better handicapped accessibility.

The Primary School playground areas also have been sealcoated.

Nearby, an employee from J Jadin Trucking & Excavating was rototilling in preparation for grass seeding along the new bus drive. Landscapers also arrived this week to begin their work.

Inside the Primary School, the new classrooms are 95-percent complete, according to Mike Frailing, the project manager from Nexus Solutions. This week, floors were being stripped and waxed in preparation for the upcoming school year.

Frailing complimented Stahl Electric of Luxemburg and Bayland Buildings of Hobart for their respective roles in ensuring an on-time completion of work at the Primary School. “They really stepped up to meet the schedule,” says Frailing.

The Primary School’s new, secure front entrance continues to take shape, remaining on schedule for use in the upcoming school year.

“I want to note how helpful the maintenance and custodial staffs of the two schools have been,” Frailing says. “They have helped to move this project along by productively cleaning the rooms and getting them ready for use upon completion. I can’t thank them enough.”

At the site for the new Middle School building, the ground is being prepared for pouring of the footings later this month.
